Background of the Study

Access to clean water is essential for preventing waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea. However, many households in rural and semi-urban areas of Taraba State rely on untreated water sources, increasing their risk of infection (WHO, 2024). Household water treatment methods, including boiling, chlorination, and filtration, have proven effective in reducing disease transmission.

Despite efforts to promote household water treatment education, many residents either lack knowledge of proper techniques or fail to implement them consistently (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Understanding the effectiveness of such education programs is critical to improving public health outcomes in the state.

This study examines the effect of household water treatment education on waterborne disease prevention in Taraba State, assessing whether increased awareness leads to better hygiene practices and reduced disease prevalence.

Statement of the Problem

Waterborne diseases remain a significant health challenge in Taraba State, despite ongoing public health interventions. Many households still consume untreated water due to inadequate knowledge or limited access to treatment resources (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). The effectiveness of household water treatment education in improving hygiene behaviors and reducing disease transmission remains unclear.

This study evaluates the impact of household water treatment education on waterborne disease prevention and identifies barriers to its adoption.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of awareness of household water treatment methods in Taraba State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of water treatment education on waterborne disease prevention.
  3. To identify challenges affecting the adoption of household water treatment practices.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness of household water treatment methods in Taraba State?
  2. How does household water treatment education influence waterborne disease prevention?
  3. What challenges hinder the adoption of household water treatment practices?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Household water treatment education has no significant impact on residents’ knowledge of water hygiene.
  2. There is no significant relationship between household water treatment education and reduced waterborne diseases.
  3. Implementation challenges do not significantly affect the adoption of household water treatment practices.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on households in both rural and urban areas of Taraba State, assessing the impact of water treatment education on disease prevention. Limitations include variations in access to clean water, economic constraints, and cultural perceptions of water treatment.

Definitions of Terms

  • Household Water Treatment: Methods used at the household level to purify drinking water, such as boiling, filtration, and chlorination.
  • Waterborne Diseases: Illnesses caused by consuming or coming into contact with contaminated water sources.
  • Water Treatment Education: Awareness campaigns and programs designed to teach safe water purification techniques.
